Why Your Skin Wants You to Eat More Fat

If you want to know the benefits of eating more fat, look no further than your skin. While sugar strips your skin of hydration, collagen, and essential proteins…healthy fats give them back to you in abundance!

There is no more obvious place to determine your overall health than the appearance of your skin. Fill your body with junk, engage in unhealthy lifestyle habits, deprive yourself of restorative sleep, and your skin will advertise your transgressions to the world.

Wait…isn’t fat the enemy?

No, it isn’t. For decades, food manufactures (fully backed by the medical community and the unproven “science” of the time) insisted fat was the bad guy. Though many doctors and scientists doubted the findings, the new “fad” went forward anyway…with disastrous results for human health in the United States and other countries that followed our lead.

Now they’re taking it back. Unfortunately, the far-reaching damage caused by such wrong information will likely take many more decades of reeducation (including a whole new food pyramid) to reverse before the tidal wave of illness is slowed.

We’re a very sick society now. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease, and obesity are some of the biggest killers despite consumers moving to a low-fat diet as suggested by their doctors, schools, and the food industry.

Recent studies have proven that eating a diet of 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs is how past generations prevented the epidemic of health concerns currently plaguing civilization. It’s also the reason native peoples have such low incidences of debilitating disease even now.

The influx of chemicals, artificial sweeteners, refined grains, growth hormones, and antibiotics to our food supply assailed our bodies and even caused changes to our brain chemistry.

Eating more healthy fats benefits your entire body.

Science shows that your brain (60% fat), lungs (coating made mostly of fat), heart (utilizes fat far more efficiently than carbs/sugar), immune system (a key substance in white blood cells), and skin (fat is the primary building block of cellular membranes) get the greatest benefits of healthy fats. We’re dangerously deficient in essential fats (omega-3) but our diet is filled with unhealthy fats (especially omega-6).

We transitioned to a diet high in refined carbs and sugar that we were told were “natural” and “good for us” while we grew ever fatter and sicker, while we aged more rapidly and lost the energy and motivation to change it.

Gary Taubes, author of “Why We Get Fat,” explains, “If the world had never invented cigarettes, lung cancer would be rare disease. Likewise, if we did not eat such high carb diets, obesity would be a rare condition.”

The Anti-Aging Skin Protecting Benefits of Eating More Fats

Healthy fats are naturally anti-inflammatory with powerful antioxidant properties.

They moisturize your skin from the inside out and help keep your skin firm yet supple. The glands that produce oil in your skin need essential fats.

Another interesting fact is that you can drink all the water you want, but if you don’t consume fats, it won’t make it into your cells. That means it can help flush toxins but it isn’t able to enter cells unless you’re metabolizing fats in your diet.

Using products that are water based rather than oil-based (such as my go-to beauty product coconut oil) tend to dry out the skin and leave you more susceptible to damage from sunlight, bacteria, and fungi. The water easily evaporates, leaving you with little protection.

Applying a pure oil under your usual anti-aging products make them more effective. Coconut oil penetrates deeply into the epidermis layer and has more effect on your fibroblasts (they produce the collagen in your skin).

Where you might think applying oil to your face will result in oily skin, the opposite is actually true. Coconut oil actually balances your own skin oil production.

Eating the right combination of healthy fats (to feed your insides) and application of healthy fats (to protect your body’s largest organ) will give you more energy, better health, and the lovely skin you’ve been looking for in every over-priced cream that promises the world and delivers very little.

Here are a few of my favorite healthy fats…

  • Organic eggs
  • Avocado
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Coconut oil
  • Wild Salmon and other wild fatty fish
  • Grass-fed butter
  • Olives and olive oil
  • Dark chocolate (at least 72% cacao)
  • Cheese (the good stuff)
  • Greek yogurt
  • Bone broth

Don’t just take my word for it – do your own research.

The truth is that food manufacturers wanted to sell more products. They told us not to eat the natural (oh-so-good for us) foods we were accustomed to eating and to buy their products that often aren’t even real food. We listened, we thought we were doing it right, and all of us are paying for it now.
