There was a time I didn’t get regular massages. I was “too busy” and couldn’t find time for something that was exclusively a vacation perk in my mind.
After years of working from home, sitting for hours every day at my computer, I was locked up. My body ached, my weight loss was stalled, and I felt sluggish. I got colds more often, felt “off” most days, couldn’t concentrate, and wasn’t sleeping properly.
A chain opened a massage location near me and I decided to treat myself. It wasn’t very expensive and I figured I “earned it” working 60 hours a week.
When I left, the true benefits of massage took effect.
Mentally, it felt as though I’d worked out but my muscles were relaxed, loose. The tightness in my neck, shoulders, and arms was gone. It took up residence so gradually that I hadn’t noticed the pain until it was gone. I craved water and my mind felt clear.
That night, I slept deeper than I had in months.
I ended up getting a subscription and every month, I return for a massage. Whether I work out or not, take days off or not, I go because I feel better when I do this one thing for myself.
There’s no doubt that it helps me mentally. What surprised me were the physical massage benefits I experienced. Sure, my muscles felt better, but it was more than that.
I felt clearer, cleaner somehow. I noticed that I not only slept better, I wasn’t getting sick as often. My results were consistent and measurable.

Another study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) found that massage boosts skin tone and health, lowers blood pressure, and results in fewer illnesses such as the common cold.
