7 Benefits of Spirulina
Take a deep breath and let’s talk about spirulina benefits. Seriously. Take a deep breath. While you’re doing that – thank spirulina. If not for these blue-green microalgae, you wouldn’t have the air you’re breathing.
It’s one of the oldest life forms on Earth and billions of years ago, it helped produce the oxygen that turned our planet into a place suitable for life like us.
After all this time, it’s still working wonders.
Sometimes known as the original superfood, spirulina is one of the most nutrient-dense foods known to exist. Laboratory studies discovered that you could survive and thrive on a diet of nothing but spirulina and water. Admittedly, many would not find this to be the ideal diet but there are many benefits of spirulina.
What Makes Spirulina the Original Superfood?
1. All essential amino acids – present and accounted for.
Amino acids are small molecules that form proteins. They are crucial to every core process in your body. They build muscle, repair tissue, and maintain mood.
2. Burn even more fat during exercise.
In a blind study, individuals taking spirulina supplements instead of a placebo decreased glucose oxidation by 11% – their bodies burned fat for energy.
3. Ramp up immunity!
Research has indicated that one of the benefits of spirulina normalizes your body’s T-cell count as well as boosting production of interferon. In essence, spirulina protects cell membranes so that invading viruses have difficulty attaching themselves to cells. This has proven effective against herpes, influenza, and HIV.
4. Every known antioxidant in one place.
When ranked on the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) scale, a way of measuring a food’s antioxidant concentration, spirulina is astounding. It is the food richest in beta-carotene and contains ten mixed carotenoids. Blueberries, a high-antioxidant food, have an ORAC rating of 2400.
Spirulina is rated at a staggering 25,300. Antioxidants are powerful cancer fighters, stopping and often reversing the damage caused by free radicals.
5. Kick cancer’s butt every step of the way.
Phycocyanin, a biliprotein in spirulina, inhibits cancer formation. One study conducted among tobacco chewers resulted in a total regression of precancerous mouth lesions among 45% of subjects given spirulina extracts for twelve months.
New research shows that spirulina binds with radioactive isotopes used during radiation and chemotherapy. Those isotopes kill healthy tissue as well as cancerous on their own. Spirulina offers healthy cells protection they wouldn’t normally have.
6. Remove heavy metal out of your body – if not your playlist.
Heavy metals are everywhere in our toxic modern environment. Spirulina binds to them, enabling them to be flushed safely from your system.
Where do these metals come from? The air you breathe may contain cadmium and lead. The government allows an acceptable level of mercury in the fish you eat. Most deodorants contain aluminum. Spirulina helps eliminate these from your body.
7. Keep the ticker strong and pumping for years longer.
Not only does spirulina contain high levels of omega-3s, it’s been proven to reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol levels while elevating HDL “good” cholesterol levels in the body. This naturally lowers blood pressure and improves the health of your heart.
These are just a few of the many spirulina benefits. This natural superfood has been safely used for thousands of years by many different cultures for everything from a food source to a medicine.
NASA studied it as a compact, easy to grow food for the International Space Station.
For those of us on the ground, it is a recommended healthy addition to our daily lives. Now…take a deep breath and think about it.
