Exfoliating the Hollywood Way
One anti-aging tip that stood out, through all my research, is that many Hollywood women we admire for their ageless skin exfoliate daily.
But, before I go into their secret techniques, I would like to give you a little background on exfoliating and why these celebrities know their stuff.
Exfoliation does many things to improve the texture and quality of your skin. You may know that it sloughs off dead skin. But, as we get older, the body’s ability to shed dead skin slows down. So we need to help it out.
What you may not realize is that every time you exfoliate you are stimulating blood flow, which brings more oxygen to the skin.
It also regenerates new skin cells and prepares your skin to absorb the ingredients in moisturizers and serums – it allows better penetration of your products.
Most importantly, exfoliation rebuilds collagen. As we age, our collagen slows down and starts to become depleted. When collagen breaks down, wrinkles form.
As you can see in the illustration below, younger skin is tight and firm where the older skin shows signs of the breakdown of collagen and the formation of wrinkles.
Here are just a few reasons to use the anti-aging power of exfoliation:

You may be surprised to learn that in between facials and peels they use at-home, DIY (do it yourself) methods to exfoliate.
Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, who were known rivals, had one beauty secret in common. They both shaved their faces to exfoliate!
Might sound crazy but they were on to something.
You see, there is a technique called dermaplaning, which is similar to shaving. Dermaplaning has been around for 30+ years. But the two were shaving before dermaplaning. And dermaplaning has recently gained a lot of popularity amongst celebrities.
Dermaplaning is the process of gently scraping a surgical blade across the face at a 40° to 45° angle. It removes the most superficial layer of the skin and the peach fuzz (vellus hairs). And it’s painless.
If you are wondering if the process will have you growing a beard, you can relax because vellus hairs do not grow back thicker. They grow back the same way they were – soft and white.
But how well does it work? According to studies, dermaplaning is an effective form of exfoliation. Used in conjunction with chemical peels it has been shown to improve acne scars.
It is not recommended that you do dermaplaning at home. If you are interested in it, many dermatologists, estheticians and plastic surgeons provide the service. If you feel comfortable enough though, you could give it a try. Men have been doing it for centuries. Otherwise, you could just use Marilyn and Liz’s method and pick up a shaver.
If you try the shaving or dermaplaning technique, the only area you shouldn’t shave on your face is your nose. The hairs on the nose have a tendency to grow back thicker.
Anti-Aging Products from the Kitchen and More
Cindy Crawford who is one of America’s top supermodels will be joining the 50 and up club soon. She still has a youthful look about her and attributes it to her kitchen-exfoliating treatment.
Surprising, besides her skincare product (Meaningful Beauty®), Cindy uses whole milk and mineral water (equal parts) and mists it on her face daily. The lactic acid from milk exfoliates the skin and leaves it soft and supple.
DIY – mist the milk solution and let dry. Rinse and pat dry. Do morning and night to achieve Cindy’s dewy fresh look.
Celebrity Aestheticians’ DIY Exfoliating Recipe
Celebrity aestheticians and makeup artists hold the key to a lot of the secrets we all want to know about our favorite stars. They know who has problem skin and who has flawless skin. But more importantly they know how to make it look beautiful and youthful.
Susan Ciminelli is a New York aesthetician to Jennifer Lopez, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Jessica Simpson, just to name a few. Susan is also regularly featured on The Martha Stewart Show.
She is the founder of The Susan Ciminelli Spa in Midtown Manhattan and has shared many of her kitchen recipes with her clients. Here is one that is quick and easy, but more importantly it works:
How to Stay Young with the Honey and Yogurt Mask
• ½ cup full-fat Greek Yogurt
• 2 tablespoons of raw honey
“Mix the two ingredients, make sure to blend well. Apply to clean skin. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes. Remove with a warm, damp washcloth. This can be done three times a week. The lactic acid in this mask will naturally peel away dead cells and the honey will draw moisture into the skin while protecting it from bacterial growth. This mask leaves the skin soft, dewy and fresh!”
I Want Her Skin – DIY From the Glam Squad
Ildi Pekar is a facialist to celebrities and models and has a salon on Madison Ave. in NYC. Ildi is best known for her anti-aging facials.
A DIY mask that she recommends is avocado and honey. It’s very hydrating and a great treatment between facials.
Ildi tells the Makeup Examiner that she also recommends something she has coined, “Pillow Therapy: purchase silk or satin pillow cases (I picked mine up at Wal-Mart for $5) to prevent and avoid creases from forming during your night’s sleep. And try to sleep on your back,” Pekar suggests.
“When you get up in the morning, wash your skin with lukewarm water and give yourself a gentle massage for stimulation. If you sleep on your face it causes poor circulation, which leads up to more wrinkles. Give your skin the extra circulation it needs to avoid any creases.”
Ildi tells New Beauty that she recommends the following mask for wrinkle reduction and moisture:
How to Stay Young with the Vitamin Bomb Face Mask
• ½ of a Banana
• 1 Apricot
• 1 tablespoon of lukewarm water
“First prepare the mask by removing the skin and the seeds from the apricot and then cut it into small pieces. Peel the banana, and cut it into small pieces as well. Mix the two fruits with lukewarm water in a blender (or a mixing bowl with a smashing tool). Mix the ingredients together until there’s a creamy, fluffy texture. Apply the mask to your face, covering everything excluding your eyes, lips and nostrils. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse with cool water.”
“This mask contains vitamins that treat wrinkles, dehydration, and even skin tone and texture. Apricots contain vitamins A, B, and C, which heal damaged skin and help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Apricot is very nourishing and is great for maintaining skin elasticity. Banana is a natural moisturizer since 75 percent of the fruit is water weight. Vitamins C and B6 help with skin elasticity and deliver a healthy glow. Both fruits help fight against aging and improve skin tone and texture. Not to mention, it’s very tasty!”
