In more scientific terms, a ketogenic diet lowers your overall blood sugar, which thereby elevates the levels of ketones in your blood.
Ketones are a byproduct produced by the breakdown of fats during metabolism.
Glucose, or sugar, is a byproduct of carbohydrate metabolism. Like glucose, ketones can be used by the body as an alternative energy source. If we limit our consumption of carbohydrates and eat more healthy fats instead, we can then move our bodies into a ketogenic state, where ketones replace glucose as our primary fuel source.
The ketogenic diet has long been used as a treatment for adults and children suffering from epilepsy, yet scientists aren’t quite sure how this diet specifically helps those with epilepsy. All that’s known is that a ketogenic diet seems to prevent seizures in these people.
How Can The Benefits of a Ketogenic Diet Save Your Life?
But what’s all this about a ketogenic diet potentially saving your life? How’s that possible?
Well, it’s understood that cancer cells thrive on sugar. And since we know that carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, we know that a high-carb diet only provides nutrients for cancerous cells to grow and multiply. I’m sure you can see where this is going…By eating fewer carbs, we rob cancer cells of their nutrients since they cannot utilize ketones.A high-carb diet only provides nutrients for cancerous cells to grow and multiply.Click To Tweet
Dr. Thomas Seyfried, is a renowned cancer researcher who has devoted much time to study the ketogenic diet and its effects. Dr. Seyfried describes the ketogenic diet as a “whole body therapy,” designed to fight cancer on all fronts. By replacing glucose with ketones as our body’s primary fuel source, we can quell the spread of cancer.
So what does a ketogenic diet actually look like?
Here’s a rough estimate of how many calories you should get from macronutrients each day:
- Carbohydrates – 5%
- Protein – 25%
- Fats – 75%
So for a 2,000 calories diet, you would consume about 20-60 grams of carbs. About a quarter of your calories should come from protein, and the rest from fats. You’ll want to eat healthier saturated fats like coconut oil, grass fed butter, and whole nuts.
A necessary part of starting a ketogenic diet plan is to begin keeping track of all the foods you do eat, so you can be sure you’re not consuming too many carbs. Many smartphone apps exist for the sole purpose of counting calories and / or carbohydrates and these will definitely come in handy.
A side effect of the ketogenic diet is that your body won’t retain as much water, so it’s absolutely essential that you drink more water and also eat more salt. Try pink Himalayan salt – it’s full of nutrients missing from most processed salts. Electrolytes are often lost in the urine and a lack of water retention means you’ll need to consume more electrolytes to compensate. Two minerals you’ll definitely need more of are magnesium and potassium.
It may also be a good idea to regularly test the ketone levels in your blood to ensure that you are staying on track with the diet. This can be done with a blood monitoring system and special ketone test strips, similar to those used to test for blood sugar. This absolutely isn’t necessary, but it will yield accurate results.
The ketogenic diet may seem like a rapid departure from most diet suggestions, and it is. However, the benefits of a ketogenic diet are quite unique, and it may even help you to prevent cancer. If you’d like to limit your consumption of sugars, or just try something new, then the ketogenic diet may be for you.
